This book examines the relationship between the operation of customary justice systems and the legal empowerment of poor and marginalized populations. It stems from a broad IDLO research program covering Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea, Liberia and Uganda. Key aspects of traditional justice are discussed, such as the rise of customary law in justice sector reform, the effectiveness of hybrid justice systems, and access to justice through community courts. Other key areas dealt with include customary law and land tenure, land rights and nature conservation, and judicial reforms based on traditional justice.
