Defueling Conflict: Notes from the Field — A How-to Toolkit for Practitioners

Phoebe Spencer, World Bank (United States)

This presentation will offer an overview of Defueling Conflict: Notes from the Field which explores the how to of environmental peacebuilding and conflict sensitivity. This new publication includes practical tools and field lessons relevant to practitioners working on analytics, projects, programs, or safeguards in fragile settings, dealing with livelihoods tied to natural resources, or adjusting patterns of land use, resource access, and natural resource values.

Defueling Conflict: Notes from the Field sets out to:

  • Provide practical tools and guidance to integrate FCV and NRM considerations across the program cycle.

  • Demonstrate innovative methods for measuring and monitoring outcomes, and for building the evidence base.

  • Serve as a resource for institutions looking to build environmental peacebuilding and conflict sensitivity capacities.

This publication directly builds on Defueling Conflict: Environment and Natural Resource Management as a Pathway to Peace (2022), which synthesized NRM-conflict linkages and environmental entry points to support resilience building and stronger social cohesion.
