After COP30: Securing Peace in a Warming World (A Path to Ottawa Event)

Feb 4, 2026 | Surge Africa Organisation (SAO)

Please join us for this Path to Ottawa Event on February 4, 2026 at 9 am EST to 10:30 am EST.

Event Description:

This will be an online discussion examining how peace and security featured before, during, and after COP30, and why the nexus remained largely peripheral within formal UNFCCC negotiations. The session will unpack the political dynamics that shaped the summit, the visibility of CPS issues across the blue and green zones, and the influence of presidency priorities, funding constraints, and broader geopolitical tensions. By taking stock of these dynamics, the event aims to clarify how climate security was positioned at COP30 and what this means for future global climate governance.

The conversation will explore three guiding questions:

  1. How did political and institutional factors shape expectations ahead of COP30?
  2. To what extent were peace and security reflected in negotiations and side events in Brazil?
  3. And what opportunities now exist to strengthen CPS integration in upcoming UNFCCC processes and environmental peacebuilding agendas?

To address these questions, the event will gather international experts including Nazanine Moshiri (Berghof Foundation), Ellie Kinney (CEOBS), and Dr. Barbara Magalhães Teixeira (SIPRI), with moderation by Gabriel Lagrange, Surge Africa’s Climate Security Lead.

Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the institutional and political barriers that limited CPS visibility at COP30, as well as actionable insights to support stronger integration of peace and security considerations in the lead‑up to the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding.
