With its high concentrations of certain rare earth minerals that are critical for technology manufacturing, Myanmar has become one of the largest suppliers of these minerals to China. In Kachin State, control over rare earth corridors has become a strategic lever in a fragmented political landscape, with the Kachin Independence Army now controlling key mining zones and China cautiously reopening trade routes. In this session, we will assess how rare earth trade flows are impacting the conflict, China’s engagement with state and non-state actors, and the local political context.
