Session Description
Environmental damage in conflict and post conflict societies, and its subsequent impacts on both ecosystems and the peoples’ human rights, has increasingly become a point of concern for practitioners from diverse fields.
The concern and awareness on the environmental issues has led to a clarion call, and a demand, for environmental harm and damage to be recognized and addressed not only at national levels, but at the global level, not only in times of conflict, but also in times of peace.
So far, it is becoming clear that the environment should be an agenda in any transitional justice, peacebuilding and humanitarian effort.
In support of the call for national and international actors to do more in the environment-conflict and peacebuilding nexus, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the ICC in December 2025 launched a Policy on Addressing Environmental Damage through the Rome Statute. While some have applauded the policy as a milestone that provides an opportunity, others have cast doubt on the development.
The webinar will provide a platform to share practitioner reflections on OTP-ICC policy, and examine the opportunities and challenges associated with the OTT-ICC policy.
