The Nile River, also known as ‘the father of African rivers’, stretches over 4,100 miles and is a vital source of freshwater for 11 countries in the Nile Basin. With its two tributaries, the White Nile and the Blue Nile, it has been significantly important for livelihood in countries like Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, which are dependent on Nile Water from centuries for food, agriculture and electricity. At the heart of this river lies Ethiopia’s dream project, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) initiated by Ethiopian President Meles Zenawi on 2nd April, 2011.
