This Brief provides main findings from a study of all land and resource laws in force in Africa in 2025 to assess the legal status of community based customary lands and the pressures they are under. Rising violent conflict and civil war is an identified trigger to involuntary loss of communal lands in at least 15 of 55 Africa states.
