Previous research at ODI Global has demonstrated the importance of grassroots social movements for achieving social and political change and argues that, if supported with good quality, non-circumscribed, long-term funding, these are a way of shifting power and agency to those communities most affected by the harms they are resisting. If funders are as serious as they claim about shifting power, they should get serious about funding grassroots movements in ways that do this. This is something that ODI, Social Action and Kebetkache aim to explore and bring to light through this new research.
