The debate around the Indus Waters Treaty is often made to look like a straight legal argument between India and Pakistan. But that feels too narrow, really. What’s on the line is the future of water stability in one of the planet’s most climate-vulnerable regions. The treaty covers rivers that keep farms, cities, hydropower systems, food webs, and livelihoods moving. So when India argues it can keep the treaty on hold, the risk isn’t just diplomatic either. It also sets a precedent that water can be turned into leverage over people downstream, and that part matters.
