Myanmar: Probe into Gems Fund Leads to Calls for Chair’s Removal

The probe into an alleged US$100 million gems fund heist has only become more convoluted with the addition of counter-investigations and infighting within the association that launched the initial complaint. In May, more than 80 members of the Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Entrepreneurs Association called for an investigation into the disappearance of funds. The complaint implicated senior officials of the previous government – including the former president – in an embezzlement scandal, allegations the ex-mines minister and ex-information minister have both denied.
