IN strengthening the African Union’s efforts to advance the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda across the continent, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held his first official meeting with the AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula.

The main objective of the discussions was to deliberate on the implementation of the Special Envoy’s specific mandate, in line with the AU’s strategic goals.

During the talks, Chairperson Youssouf emphasized that the Special Envoy’s role must align with Africa’s broader development strategies, including Agenda 2063 and the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), as well as international frameworks such as United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

Youssouf underscored the importance of involving women in leading peace efforts, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Sudan, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region. He also encouraged solidarity between women and youth in peacebuilding efforts and stressed the need to integrate gender perspectives in all AU-led peace processes.
