The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced the launch of a program to rehabilitate water supply systems in deprived areas of Afghanistan, aiming to improve children’s access to clean drinking water.
In a post on X on Monday, January 5, UNICEF said that rehabilitating these systems will enable children to access safe water without having to travel long distances, thereby reducing the risk of disease.
UNICEF added that the program is being implemented with the support of donors and is intended to provide clean water to families that have faced a lack of safe drinking water for years.
The United Nations has repeatedly emphasized that access to safe water is one of Afghanistan’s most urgent needs and can play a critical role in improving children’s health conditions.
This comes as drought has intensified across Afghanistan in recent years, while access to safe water sources has declined more sharply than ever.
The report also indicates that Kabul’s water resources are rapidly drying up, and the city’s population of six million could face severe water shortages by 2030 due to declining rainfall, reduced snowfall, and excessive groundwater extraction.
