The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has announced that a large solar-powered water supply system will be constructed in Laghman province to address the needs of internally displaced returnees.

In a statement released on Monday, January 5, the organization said the new water system will serve 600 families, providing them with sustainable access to safe drinking water. UN-Habitat added: “This project is a real lifeline for the community.”

The project is described as part of the organization’s broader efforts to improve living conditions for returnees and internally displaced people in Laghman, to reduce hardships caused by the lack of access to clean drinking water.

The reconstruction comes as UNICEF has previously reported that access to safe water has become severely limited for millions of Afghans, with eight out of every ten people in Afghanistan drinking contaminated water.
