For thousands of years, gold has been tied to Sudan’s identity—from the kingdoms of Kush and Napata to the inscriptions left by the Pharaohs who sought control over the “Land of Gold.” Ironically, this historic wealth, once expected to drive development, has in recent decades become a source of chaos, smuggling, and war financing.
