As of 8 January 2026, the National Unity Government (NUG) has condemned the military junta’s attempt to revive the controversial Myitsone Dam project, calling it a betrayal of Myanmar’s sovereignty. U Nay Phone Latt, spokesperson for the NUG, criticised the junta's decision to continue with the project, which he claims compromises the country’s natural resources in exchange for power.

In another development, violence between the junta's forces and revolutionary groups intensified. A deadly attack in Myothit Township targeted a convoy of the junta’s Election Commission, resulting in the deaths of eight junta personnel, including the township police officer. This is just one of several confrontations as the revolutionary forces continue their resistance.
